Don't attempt any major DIY projects with electricity wiring, as it can cost you hefty fines. These regulations are put into place, after the concerns of domestic hazards due to faulty wiring at homes.
Electricity supply to your home is not a monopoly of any company. You can switch suppliers, if you think it is a reasonable step. However, your supplier can stop the switch, if you have outstanding arrears. If you plan to switch electricity supplier, make sure you cancel the direct debit, in case you use that option to pay your bills.
Make sure you take a look at the meter (credit or prepaid meter) once a while not only to keep electricity use under check, but also to ensure your company doesn't give you unfair bills. With electricity supply, you have the control in your hands.
