electricity supply

Electricity supply is something you ask first while moving into a new home. Although it is not a difficult task to get electricity supply, you still need to think about the company that will provide electricity to your home.

It is extremely difficult today to imagine a life without electricity. Electricity supply when disconnected can throw your life out of balance, as you will find it impossible to keep yourself in an illuminated room, keep yourself warm, keep the food without spoiling, cook your favourite dishes, iron your dress, operate your computer or watch TV.

When you enjoy all the benefits of electricity, it will be an impossible task to think about the life of people who lived on the earth, before electricity was invented in mid 19th century. Today, you need electricity for virtually everything, from lighting a room to operating your computer. Thanks, electricity is too much a versatile form of energy that can be controlled and made into use in whatever form you like.

Electricity supply, though easily available comes with a price. You have to pay for the electricity you use. The bills come in monthly or quarterly. You can also opt for a prepaid electricity supply, if you live on a budget and you need to control the amount you pay to the electricity supplier. However, prepaid electricity supply can cost you much higher than that of a regular credit billing system. Prepaid connection will also be suggested in case you make defaults in paying electricity bills, without you asking to do so. In this case, your arrears will be recovered as you use electricity. The more electricity you use, the more of your arrears will be recovered by the supplier.

Prepayment electricity meters are however expensive method to get electricity supply. It also has the risk of not buying the recharge coupon, which can send you to darkness and cold. In the UK, if your electricity supplier forgets to send you bill for more than a year, it is their loss and you are not responsible to pay the electricity supply charges left unbilled for more than a year.

Several companies across UK handle both gas and electricity supply and both are controlled by same agencies. There are different independent bodies like OFGEM set up by the government to monitor and regulate electricity and gas suppliers. OFGEM code of conduct ensures electricity customers are dealt with fairly, reasonably and sensitively.

You will not be provided with electricity supply, if you don't stick to the strict norms of electric wiring for your home. Only a qualified electrician can handle the wiring tasks and any wiring that is not approved is valid reason for the electricity supplier to deny you electricity supply. Don't attempt any major DIY projects with electricity wiring, as it can cost you hefty fines. These regulations are put into place, after the concerns of domestic hazards due to faulty wiring at homes.

Electricity supply to your home is not a monopoly of any company. You can switch suppliers, if you think it is a reasonable step. However, your supplier can stop the switch, if you have outstanding arrears. If you plan to switch electricity supplier, make sure you cancel the direct debit, in case you use that option to pay your bills.

Make sure you take a look at the meter (credit or prepaid meter) once a while not only to keep electricity use under check, but also to ensure your company doesn't give you unfair bills. With electricity supply, you have the control in your hands.
